Los Alamos Family Council (LAFC) is raising money to provide crisis intervention services to those in need throughout the region and at the same time pay tribute to local police, firefighters and veterans.

LAFC is hosting a dinner, dance and auction fundraiser at 6 p.m. Saturday, Veteran’s Day, Nov. 11 at Hilton Buffalo Thunder Resort featuring Country Recording Artist Will Bannister and the Modern Day Ramblers. This Veteran’s Day event also will be in recognition for this community's selfless first responders and veterans.

This special event is $125 per person or $1,000 for a table of eight and includes dinner, drinks, dancing and a boot scooting’ evening. For more information on sponsorships or to help with silent auction donations, visit http://lafamilycouncil.org/boots-badges/.

“The support of the community is really important to us because we are a nonprofit and the funds we get through grants is limited,” Executive Director Joy Beery said during an interview Tuesday at her office.

She explained that through the years she has seen the needs of the community grow. Clients seeking services at LAFC is now about a 50/50 split of Lab and non Lab individuals.

“It's tough to be poor in Los Alamos,” said Counseling Center Program Director Cheryl Pongratz. Our poor and homeless are pretty invisible ... a mentally healthy community requires mental health service.”

Pongratz and Beery point to two things they say have had a significantly positive impact on the community: The County standing up a social services department and Kristy Ortega taking over the local United Way at about the same time.

“Those two things have made an incredible difference in Los Alamos,” Pongratz said.

Los Alamos Family Council is the only nonprofit behavioral health agency in Los Alamos County. For 54 years it has served Los Alamos and the surrounding areas. LAFC addresses both mental health and substance abuse issues that can destroy individuals, families and communities if ignored or left untreated. The two Youth Activity Centers, programs of LAFC, focus on prevention and development of youth resiliency help prevent future behavioral health issues.

The annual LAFC Fall Ball is an opportunity to invite and honor veterans and first responders to recognize their selfless service and help defray unmet expenses of providing behavioral health services to those in need.

“Thank you for your assistance in helping us help those in crisis,” Pongratz said.

More About LAFC

LAFC is more than a counseling center. LAFC also operates two Youth Activity Centers. The Youth Activity Centers are a natural part of LAFCs mission to enhance the quality of life through prevention of substance use and abuse. The programming focus of the Activity Centers is on youth resiliency, a safe, supervised environment and positive adult role models.

The Youth Activity Center in Los Alamos is on the east side of Ashley Pond and the one in White Rock is behind the White Rock Branch Library on Sherwood Boulevard. Program Director Jordan Redmond operates the centers, which provide free supervised activities for youth in grades 3-8. Last year there were more than 14,000 visits. The centers are open every day after school, during school in service days and vacations, and during the summer.

Funding for the programs comes primarily from Los Alamos County, United Way of Northern New Mexico and private donations.

The Counseling Center supports the mission with emphasis on counseling, education and prevention. The Counseling Center is the original core of LAFC services and continues to offer a full range of behavioral health services for Los Alamos and surrounding counties.

LAFC is governed by an active Board of Directors. The organization incorporated in 1962 as a small counseling center. It has expanded to include a full range of counseling services for mental health and substance abuse.

Funding at LAFC Counseling Center is from New Mexico Medicaid (Centennial Care), New Mexico Department of Health, United Way of Northern New Mexico, and donations from private donors. There is a reduced rate for those who are self pay and extremely flexible payment plans are available.
