Owner Don Taylor of Don Taylor’s Photography opened the doors of his new studio Tuesday morning at 181 Central Park Square.

“It’s exciting to start the new year in this new location next to Fuller Lodge where I spend a lot of time taking photographs,” Taylor said during an interview Tuesday morning at his new studio. “This is my fourth location in 33 years and I feel like I've come full circle having started my first studio where CB FOX Kidz is now on Central. Next I moved to where the Subway is now and finally to 999 Central but I've always liked this area behind Fuller Lodge so I'm happy to finally be here.”

Taylor describes what he does as being “the best job in the world” and expressed his gratitude to the community for making the last three decades such a joy for him.

“It has been a privilege to be able to provide the service we do in a town like this,” he said.

Taylor is the third owner of the business, which dates to 1947 and founder Victor Stevenson. The second owner was Don Elliott who was a Los Alamos National Laboratory photographer. Elliott later advertised the business for sale in a trade publication, which Taylor read while living in New England. He decided to buy the business in 1984 and move to Los Alamos.

Taylor has been a professional photographer since 1978, attending many schools including the New England Institute of Professional Photography and the Winona Institute of Professional Photography, and is a graduate of the Hallmark Institute of Professional Photography. He is an active member of the Professional Photographers of America, the Professional Photographers Association of New Mexico and the Photo Marketing Association.

Since moving to Los Alamos from New England, he has won several awards for his photography at the state, regional and national levels. He said it has always been important to stay current with technology. He bought a one-hour photo mini lab in 1985 that was state of the art at the time. The studio went completely digital in 2005.

Don Taylor’s Photography is open 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday at 181 Central Park Square. For more information, call 505.662.2523 or visit http://dontaylors.com
