COUNTY News:

Los Alamos County Council presented a proclamation, declaring Oct. 8-14 as Fire Prevention Week, to Los Alamos Fire Chief Troy Hughes and members of his staff Tuesday night during the regular County Council meeting.

Proclamation:

WHEREAS: Los Alamos County is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all those living in our community; and

WHEREAS: Fire inside a home is a serious public safety concern; newer homes are built with lightweight materials that burn faster than older home construction materials, and many of today’s products and furnishings produce toxic gases and smoke when burned, making it impossible to see and breathe within minutes; and

WHEREAS: These conditions contribute to a smaller window of time for household members to escape safely from a fire, with occupants having as little as one to two minutes to exit after the smoke alarm sounds; and

WHEREAS: A fire escape plan provides the skills and know-how to quickly and safely escape a home fire; it should include two exits from every room in the home, a path to the outside from each exit, smoke alarms in all required locations, and a safe meeting place outside where everyone can gather; and

WHEREAS:  Los Alamos County residents have shown in the past that they are responsive to public education measures and willing to take personal steps to increase their safety from fire; and

WHEREAS: This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme, “Every Second Counts: Plan 2 Ways Out!” actively promotes the message that Los Alamos County residents should have a home fire escape plan with all household members and practice it twice a year;

NOW, THEREFORE, on behalf of the Council of the Incorporated County of Los Alamos, I do hereby proclaim the Week of October 8 - 14, 2017 as “Fire Prevention Week” in Los Alamos County. I encourage our citizens to have a fire escape plan and practice it twice a year, and to participate in fire prevention events and activities sponsored by the Los Alamos Fire Department.
