Monday night we celebrated the biggest and brightest full moon of the year, the fourth full moon. In Western culture it is called Pink Moon. In Chinese culture, it is called Peach Moon.

The peach tree is one of the most planted easy growing trees in our backyard here in Los Alamos. Peach trees greet us with beautiful pink blooms in early spring and reward us with sweet juicy fruits throughout autumn.

Exhibit To Celebrate Los Alamos Concert Association’s Long History Opens In Step Up Gallery At Mesa Library May 1

An exhibit celebrating the Los Alamos Concert Association’s 75-year history opens May 1 in the Step Up Gallery on the top level of Mesa Public Library, 2400 Central Ave., in Los Alamos.

Since 1946, Los Alamos Concert Association (LACA) has presented a classical concert series featuring artists who have made a name for themselves in great concert halls around the globe. The exhibit will chronicle how LACA grew up with the community and highlight the many world-renowned artists it has presented.

Los Alamos High School Vans Marketing And Design Club Chosen One Of 50 Schools To Compete For $50,000

LAHS News:
The Los Alamos High School Vans Marketing and Design Club has been chosen as one of 50 schools (out of 250 who entered)  to compete to win $50,000 for the improvement of the high school art program. 
If they win, this will benefit future artists for a long time to come! 
First place wins $50,000.00 and four runner-ups will win $15,000 each. 
It’s fun because these shoes they painted represent Los Alamos – past, present, and  future!

New Mexico Department Of Cultural Affairs Extends Days And Hours Of Operation At State-Run Museums In Santa Fe

DCA News:

The New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) announces that days and hours of operation will be extended at state-run museums in Santa Fe.

Beginning Saturday, May 1, the New Mexico History Museum (NMHM), New Mexico Museum of Art (NMMOA), and Museum of International Folk Art will be open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week.

The Museum of Indian Arts & Culture will keep these same hours and days of operation when it re-opens to the public May 16.

Additionally, starting May 7 both NMHM and NMMOA will extend hours of operation to 7 p.m. Fridays through October.

Eurasian Collared-Doves Lifting Spirits In White Rock

Eurasian Collared-Doves visit a residence in White Rock Wednesday afternoon and lift spirits all over the county. During the 20th century, this pale dove expanded its range spectacularly from the Middle East all the way across Europe. Introduced accidentally into the Bahamas in 1974, it soon spread to the Florida mainland. Its expansion westward and northward from there since the 1980s has been remarkable, and the species is now common to abundant across much of North America, as far northwest as Oregon and Washington. LACF: Music Endowment Leads To Orchestral Inspiration

The orchestras from Los Alamos High School (LAHS) and Los Alamos Middle School (LAMS) were treated recently to a virtual masterclass as well as a virtual performance by the San Francisco string quartet Del Sol.  

LAHS alumnus Charlton Lee (Class of ‘83) founded the quartet, and their recent album, Kooch-e Khaman, is fifth on the Billboard Classical Charts.

Ashley Pond Water Levels On The Rise Sunday Afternoon

The float valve that controls the level of water in Ashley Pond got stuck Sunday. By Sunday afternoon the water level had risen high enough to cover nearly all the rocks and vegetation in the pond. 2021 Congressional Art Competition Deadline Approaches

There is still time for high school students in Congressional District 3, which includes Los Alamos, to submit their art work for this year’s Congressional Art Competition.

This is an opportunity for New Mexico’s creative, young artists to be nationally recognized for their talents and have their art displayed in the United States Capitol.

ALBUQUERQUE — The National Hispanic Cultural Center (NHCC) will host an online performance of “Conjunto Blues”, the Albuquerque premiere of this critically-acclaimed one-person show written and performed by playwright, actor, and musician Nicolás R. Valdez and directed by Joel C. Settles, at 7 p.m., Thursday, April 29.
